3 Questions to Ask Your Plastic Surgeon about Eyelid Surgery

    Last updated 1 year ago

Eyelid surgery, also known as a blepharoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to reduce the signs of aging and improve the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids. Before undergoing any type of plastic surgery procedure, it is important to fully discuss your options with your cosmetic surgeon. Consider asking your cosmetic surgeon the following questions about eyelid surgery.

    1. Am I a Good Candidate?

Your plastic surgeon can help you determine whether or not you are a candidate for eyelid surgery. A blepharoplasty may be right for you if you are suffering from:

    • Excess skin that interferes with the natural fold of your upper eyelids.
    • Sagging skin that hangs down from the upper lids and impairs vision.
    • Wrinkles, bags, and dark circles under your eyes.
    • Puffiness in your upper lids that makes you appear tired.
    • Sagging of the lower eyelid that exposes the white portion of the eye below the iris.

    2. What Will Happen During the Procedure?

Understanding what happens during the procedure itself will help you identify any possible risks and weigh the differences between similar procedures. The incisions made during the procedure will vary based on the level of correction needed; however, most incisions can be hidden along the folds of your eyelid or within the lower lid. Once the incisions have been made, your cosmetic surgeon will reinforce supportive membranes, shrink away excess fat with cautery, and reposition your skin for a more youthful appearance.

    3. What Can I Expect From the Results?

Speak with your surgeon to get a clear picture of when you can expect to see results and what aftercare will entail. Some patients tend to experience slight swelling, bruising, mild discomfort, and dry eyes after undergoing an eyelid surgery. Most individuals’ results are long-lasting and they are able to return to their daily activities within two weeks.

4 Surgeries that Redefine and Enhance Your Breasts

    Last updated 1 year ago

Breast contouring procedures have become some of the most popular plastic surgery procedures performed today. But with so many different options available, determining which cosmetic surgery best suits your needs can be a difficult task. Consider this overview on four common types of surgeries that can redefine and enhance your breasts, and then ask your cosmetic surgeon for more information.

    1. Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation, also known as an augmentation mammaplasty, is a procedure designed to increase the size of the breasts and restore volume following weight loss or pregnancy. Breast augmentation procedures are performed using either saline or silicone breast implants and employ a number of incision methods. The four incision methods commonly used for a breast augmentation include the inframammary incision, transaxillary incision, periareolar incision, and the umbilical incision.
    1. Breast Lift
A breast lift, or mastopexy, is another procedure designed to redefine and enhance the breasts. Unlike a breast augmentation that increases the size of the breasts, a breast lift raises and firms the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding contours.
    1. Breast Reduction
Women who are suffering from overly large breasts may benefit from a breast reduction. A breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is an option for women who:
    • Suffer from back and neck pain.
    • Cannot take part in physical activity due to their breast size.
    • Have skin irritation or stretch marks from low-hanging breasts.
    • Have enlarged areolas or downward-pointing nipples.
    1. Breast Reconstruction
The breast reconstruction procedure is available for patients who have had one or both breasts removed due to cancer treatment. In many cases, reconstruction can be performed immediately following a mastectomy.

Daily Habits that Cause Premature Wrinkling

    Last updated 1 year ago

Your skin loses elasticity and the ability to bounce back as you age, increasing the development of fine lines and facial wrinkles. However, the things you do on a daily basis can also impact the condition of your skin. Before you contact your cosmetic surgeon for wrinkle treatments, learn more about which daily habits can cause premature facial wrinkling.

    Drinking Coffee
Drinking coffee may give you the boost you need in the mornings, but caffeine acts like a diuretic, preventing your body from holding onto the water it needs to keep your skin hydrated. Alcohol and sugary foods can also dry out your skin and increase the look of wrinkles and lines.

    Smoking
Another daily habit that increases premature wrinkles is smoking. Nicotine and other chemicals found in cigarettes slowly destroy the collagen and elastin in your skin. Smoking also affects the blood vessels in your skin, increasing wrinkle formation and restricting the flow of oxygen so that your skin appears sallow and washed out. In addition, smoking can increase your chances of developing pucker lines around your mouth.

    Aggressive Face-Washing
Many people tend to wash their faces aggressively, especially when combatting acne. However, scrubbing your face is one of the worst things you can do to acne-prone skin. Harsh washing habits only serve to irritate and inflame your skin more and increase the risk of acne scarring.

    Being in the Sun
Using sunlamps and tanning beds and not wearing enough sunscreen when out in the sun are top causes of premature wrinkling. It’s important to wear sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher and reapply several times a day regardless of the weather. Protecting your skin with sunscreen will also decrease your risk of skin cancer.
