What Are the Common Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Last updated 1 year ago

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition in which the median nerve that runs from the forearm into the palm of the hand becomes compressed at the wrist. This nerve is responsible for controlling the sensations in the palm side of the fingers and thumb allowing for movement of certain small muscles in the hand. Fortunately, a cosmetic surgeon can often provide treatment options for individuals suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome. Continue reading to learn more about the common causes, symptoms, and treatment options for carpal tunnel syndrome.

Causes
Carpal tunnel syndrome is usually caused by a number of factors that increase pressure on the median nerve and the tendons along the carpal tunnel. Some of the common causes of carpal tunnel syndrome may include trauma or injury to the wrist, over-activity of the pituitary gland, repeated use of vibrating hand tools, repetitive motion, mechanical problems of the wrist joint, and the development of a cyst or tumor in the carpal tunnel canal. Carpal tunnel may also be caused by a number of diseases including thyroid disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes.

Signs and Symptoms
The common symptoms associated with carpal tunnel syndrome include tingling or numbness in the fingers or hand, pain radiating or extending from the wrist into the palm of the hand or shoulder, and hand weakness.

Treatment Options
There are a number of treatment options available for individuals with carpal tunnel syndrome. Some of the most common treatment options include wrist splinting, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, corticosteroids, and reconstructive surgery.
