5 Myths About Botox

Last updated 3 months ago

Botox is a simple, nonsurgical treatment performed to temporarily smooth moderate to severe frown lines in patients from 18 to 65 years of age. Although this treatment is safe, effective and the most commonly performed nonsurgical cosmetic procedure in America, there are many persistent myths surrounding Botox. Read on to learn about five myths and why they are untrue.

  1. Myth: Botox is toxic to the body.
Like other FDA-approved drugs, Botox is completely safe when administered professionally and in the correct dose. Botox has been safely used for decades in the treatment of wrinkles and medical conditions.
  2. Myth: There are facial creams that can achieve the same results as Botox.
Many cosmetic companies advertise their products as being ‘better than Botox.’ These companies are not required by the FDA to prove their claims and lack any well-founded studies to prove their anti-wrinkle effects.
  3. Myth: Botox injections are painful.
Botox is administered with a very tiny needle, allowing for injections that are relatively pain-free; most patients tolerate the treatments with little discomfort.
  4. Myth: Botox injections will distort your facial expressions.
When properly administered by a qualified physician, Botox will help to give you a youthful, rejuvenated appearance. Receiving Botox treatments from unqualified personnel can result in overdose or misdirected injections, which can affect facial expressions.
  5. Myth: Botox and dermal fillers work the same way.
Botox and dermal fillers are not the same. While both can lessen the appearance of wrinkles, Botox relaxes the muscles while fillers literally fill in the wrinkle with a medically safe substance.
